Photography that speaks
louder than words

Welcome to Ian Day Media

I have over 30 years of editorial experience working as a professional photographer and picture editor, with the majority spent in management positions. After 16 enjoyable years at The Yorkshire Post, I recently made the decision to leave my position as Deputy Editor and launch my own business, Ian Day Media. I specialise in professional editorial, commercial, and landscape photography, as well as providing a specialist picture editing service. Alongside this, I provide bespoke media consultancy and training in photography, PR, and editing.

I began my career as an NCTJ trainee photographer at the Halifax Evening Courier – in the days of black and white film and prints! Since then I have held roles of Picture Editor and Photographer at Ross Parry Picture Agency, Deputy Picture Editor and Chief Photographer at the Bradford Telegraph & Argus, Head of Sports Photography at The Press Association, Group Picture Editor, Assistant Editor and Deputy Editor at The Yorkshire Post.

During my career, I have covered and edited at many significant events – including the Sydney Olympic Games, Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon, and the British Open Golf Championships – to name just a few.

In 2015, I was honoured to be named a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and awarded an Accredited Senior in Imaging in the Creative Industries.  RPS Director-General, Dr. Michael Pritchard, said at the time: “There are fewer than 700 Fellows of The Royal Photographic Society worldwide, and it is recognised as a sign of a photographer or someone dealing with photographers and working at the highest level. Ian’s achievement is a remarkable one and he should be proud of his Fellowship.”

"Ian’s achievement is a remarkable one and he should be proud of his Fellowship."

I’ve also been a photographic judge for the British Press Awards, the Sports Journalists Association Awards, the Irish Press Photographers Association Awards, and the Chair of Judges for the 2016 UK Picture Editors’ Awards. I am also a member of the British Press Photographers’ Association.

Previously, I served as a member of the photographic board at the National Council for the Training of Journalists, where I passed on my editorial experience to help to restructure the NCTJ’s photojournalism course and examination process, updating it to include video, digital, and contemporary workflow techniques.

I enjoy all aspects of photography, but photojournalism remains my passion: telling a story through creative and powerful photography.

PROFESSIONAL

I have worked in the national and regional media industry for more than 30 years, with roles ranging from photographer and picture editor to senior editorial and management positions. I am a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, member of the UK Picture Editor's Guild and a member of the British Press Photographers’ Association.

creative

After many years of working in the newspaper industry, I have developed an eye for creativity and understand how to make the most out of quality photography. I've had the unique opportunity to collaborate directly with photographers and designers to create some of the most striking newspaper pages in the country.

INSPIRATIONAL

For many years, I have been a photographic judge for the UK & Ireland industry awards including the British Press Awards, the Sports Journalists Association Awards, and the Irish Press Photographers Association Awards. In 2016, I was also the Chair of Judges for the UK Picture Editors’ Awards.
